With village and town life being decimated by closure of amenities and shops, Britain’s rural areas are fast becoming housing estates instead of communities. Shops, pubs and churches all closing on a regular basis, parks and play areas for kids gone and even the "bobby on the beat" has vanished too. The closure of thousands of rural post office by the government was the last straw for the "patient Brit" but to the horror of the government and authorities, they’ve fought back and some post offices have had their closures rescinded. Rick has joined forces with everyone in his local village to help try and save theirs which has been earmarked for imminent closure. The fact that it runs at a profit, serves the community, (Kim the Postmistress actually delivers pensions to more than 40 people by hand who are unable to do it themselves due to disability), and attracts people from neighbouring villages and towns because you can park directly outside, (something disabled and elderly people are unable to do in the main towns), seems totally lost on the faceless bureaucrats who seem to make decisions for us British these days.
Update: With the recent announcement that the battle to save our Post Office had been lost, I was of course disgusted with this latest development as I'm sure were each and every one of my fellow villagers. Having said that, it was amazing to have been part of such a heartfelt campaign by so many great people and I'd like to thank each and every one who tried so valiantly to win the battle. We can at least be satisfied that we made our village's feelings clear to the powers that be!
